Learning
Kentucky Avenue School is committed to giving our children the best of both traditional and progressive education. While we encourage our teachers to teach as they teach best, most choose to enrich our challenging curriculum with creative, hands-on projects. A visitor to the school might observe, for example, that in language arts, the older children are rehearsing Hamlet while the younger children are writing a puppet play based on an original Winnie-the-Pooh story. In Spanish, students might be drawing family trees. In math, they might be counting passing cars outside as a lesson in probability, or using sports statistics to calculate averages. In science, they might be acting out cell membranes with hula hoops or experimenting with magnets, levers, and pulleys. In music, they might be learning a jazz riff on guitar, playing Beethoven on recorder, or learning lyrics in sign language. In gym, they might be taking a class with Dance Alloy or playing ball in the park. In current events, they might be filming an original news broadcast. In social studies, they might be preparing a PowerPoint presentation about ancient civilizations. There are always so many interesting things going on at Kentucky Avenue School that adult visitors often exclaim, “I wish I could go to school here!”
