School Life
Our community gathers frequently for playful celebrations, student presentations, field trips, and performances by visiting artists. Annually we sponsor a potluck picnic, a student art show, seasonal concerts, and an outing in winter to Schenley Skating Rink and another in spring to a Pirates game. Students enjoy Pajama Day, Crazy Hat Day, Hawaiian Day, and school-wide Yahtzee and chess tournaments. Our active Parent-Teacher Cooperative organizes many of these events. Parents also sponsor our healthy lunch program, called Kentucky Café. Dedicated volunteers prepare delicious, wholesome meals for the children, featuring natural foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.
Our teachers use the city of Pittsburgh as an extended classroom. We frequently take the children to local attractions, museums, and cultural events; parents invite classes to visit their workplaces. The children perform community service projects such as picking up trash on Earth Day. We use neighborhood parks as our gymnasium in fine weather. And sometimes teachers walk their students to a nearby café or bakery to study while enjoying a treat.
