ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE UPDATE
KAS metalsmith and Artist-in-Residence Jan Loney has begun her work with students in earnest. Each grade has been meeting with her weekly and design work is underway as students have been offering structure ideas in both 2-D and 3-D. Jan will be away from KAS for a few weeks but when she returns, work will shift from design to mock-ups and fabrication. As of today, no idea of a final project has been confirmed, but all student work will lead to a completed metal project for the KAS Exhibition of Learning in May.

ENROLLMENT @ KAS
KAS has been and will always be a small school. Nevertheless, we are extremely proud that so many area preschools have been referring students to us. At this moment, we have more Kindergarten applicants than at any point in the history of the school and a significant waiting list is expected. We are so excited that more Pittsburgh parents are starting to understand the benefits of a KAS education.

RUNNING CLUB & SPRING THAW
Our spring KAS running club start is just around the corner! We will begin weekly running in a few weeks, and our first training date (TBD) will be the Spring Thaw Challenge where students will run our practice loop to see how far they can go in a timed window. Parents: Remember, we always need parent volunteers to help with weekly practice, and that our spring goal is the Kids of Steel run early in May. Practices are once per week from 315PM-400PM.

CROSS-GRADE FRIENDSHIPS
Many parents may not fully understand that we commonly blend classes for learning and activities, as this improves academic outcomes, strengthens our community, and improves cross-grade student relationships. Last week, I received a letter from a current KAS parent celebrating this commitment and I feel it is worth sharing with you here:
“We wanted to let you know how special your middle school class is. As a parent of an [elementary] child you always worry about them being teased but in your school that is no longer a worry we have. Your middle school class has some of the nicest young adults we have ever met. They go out of their way to talk to [my child] and make him feel special. My child’s whole face lights up when he tells his stories about the "big kids" that talked to him. There is one young man that always says bye to my child when we are leaving for the day and it's so wonderful. Please let them know how much we appreciate the kindness they have shown on many occasions. They have made a difference in [my child’s] life and in ours.”

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
KAS functions best when parents are positively involved. We are always happy to have parents share their expertise and passions with our students. If you have an interest or skill you'd like to offer, please contact us: we'd love to get parents more involved with student learning at KAS.
