Pittsburgh artist and metalsmith Jan Loney presented her vision for a collaborative school project with Kentucky Avenue School students last week. Soon, students in all grades will research, write, and create contributions to a project that will culminate in a metal structure for our school later this school year. This project is funded by both a regional arts grant, and a private parent donation, and our goal is to present our finished work at the Exhibition of Learning.

January 6 Professional Development at KAS
Last week on the Chatham University campus, KAS staff hosted Kristyn Kamps, a PBL Works instructor from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kristyn spent the day sharing strategies for planning and implementing more dynamic project-based learning at Kentucky Avenue School. This training underscored our school's commitment to ever-improving authentic and project-based instruction across all grade levels. This workshop was financed by a Title 4 grant obtained by KAS.

Getting Back into the Swing of Things.
The staff and I are looking forward to a very busy and fruitful second semester at Kentucky Avenue School. I want to thank the community for supporting my time in Bangaluru, Hyderabad, Jeypore, Vizakhapatnam, and elsewhere in India last month. Our work there helped develop principals' capacities to support students academic and (especially) social and emotional needs - and to promote 21st Century Skill development. The principals, mostly from poorer districts, oversee over 20,000 students across their regions.

Afterward, I took the opportunity to spend the winter break trekking in the Annapurna Conservation Area in Nepal. I was lucky-enough to get over two weeks at altitude in the Himalaya in the winter - when there are ZERO travelers at this time of year. With no phone, internet, music, or books, the solitude was regenerative.

RUNNING & KIDS OF STEEL
KAS will again promote participation in the Kids of Steel run as part of the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon weekend early in May. Cross country/running club at our school remains steadfast and we look forward to this event as we have in the past. For planning, please note that training days will start in March and due to other school events, will usually take place this spring on TUESDAYS. Thanks and more information will be forthcoming.

A NEW EVENT FOR THE SPRING
We have a new EVENT on the annual KAS calendar: on April 23, KAS will host a "Day of Making". On this morning, parents are invited to attend KAS and join their children as they participate in a range of making activities. We'll have stations for things like planting, origami, STEM activities and more. Put it on your calendars: the Day of Making will certainly be fun and educational for all.

Register at the Library for eBooks
One way parents can help KAS and encourage reading at home is to assure their children can utilize all the resources from our public libraries. We will be working to help students register for these resources at KAS, and if you can support that at home, your efforts will help learning for all.
