Kentucky Avenue School

11 November 2025

Please join us! We have long been a school that promotes caring for one another, and for social justice. As such, we've begun a food drive this week to help those impacted by recent food scarcity issues across our community.

Thank you, parents, for your food donations so far! Please keep them coming! We will continue to collect cans and dry goods all week. Remember, next week all donations will be repacked into boxes that you can take for yourself, or to give to friends and families in need. Need a delivery? Have a confidential question? Give me a call at school.

We happily accept your cans of food and dried goods like pasta, rice, flour, and sugar. And don't forget the simultaneous student can-rolling contest, too.
Thursday is Pajamas Day - our next school spirit day. On the 13th, we hope all students (and teachers) wear their pajamas to school (this is optional, of course). Additionally, students may bring in stuffies, a favorite pillow, or other bedtime artifacts. Our goal is to celebrate our school in fun ways as we learn.

STEM Challenge Update: Bridge Building

The Bridge Building STEM Challenge has gone very differently than our previous challenges of Tower Construction and Vehicle Creation. In the case of bridge building, we have found that the time and patience required for a quality bridge can be significant. Finished bridges have taken longer than expected and their outright strength has yet to be determined.

We have learned some very important - and unexpected - lessons. For example, bridges were to be built as a team, and that has been a challenge for some. Also, many of our students exhibited natural leadership - but some still need to develop their skills in motivating and supporting their team members. Also, working within a deadline has proven to be another difficulty. Regardless of the status of the bridges themselves, the experience has been very positive.

Coming Next School Year: The KAS Silver Jubilee

Starting next August, we will have been promoting our school mission for twenty five years. Starting this spring, we will be using this important upcoming anniversary to reflect on our school and recommit to the best of who we are. We’ll be fundraising ambitiously for school improvements, reconnecting with past families, and embracing our current families as the voice for the next twenty five years. As plans solidify, I will send updates, and I hope you will actively join us as we establish the KAS mission as a benchmark for school success across Pittsburgh.

Did you get your KAS mug?

At conferences last Friday, we tried to provide a KAS mug for each family. However, some left without receiving their mug, while others had their conferences on ZOOM. If you did not receive your amazing KAS mug, please tell your homeroom teacher and we'll try to get one home to you as quickly as possible. If you do not want the mug - no worries - we'll send it off in a different direction.

Quick India Update

As mentioned, I will be away in December to provide school leadership training in India (Bangaluru, Hyderabad, and elsewhere). For many years I have worked closely with developing schools overseas to help them understand progressive global curricula and practices. While away, we have plans to meet all KAS students' needs, so don't worry. I'll provide another update (or two) in the coming weeks.
