K-5 Music Showcase on the KAS Horizon

We have much to accomplish before June 3rd (our last day of school this year)! Thanks to our parents for remaining abreast of so many events present and future. Among the events shared in this newsletter, I want to focus first on our K-5 Elementary Music Showcase, Story in Song. Our Music teacher will be hosting a wonderful evening of songs and talents Friday, May 9 starting at 6PM (tentative).

K-5 students will be singing, telling stories, and also presenting talents originally planned for a stand-alone Talent Show. We are hoping to see all students and as many parents as possible at the event. Questions? Feel free to reach out to Rachel at rachel.matos@kentuckyavenueschool.org.

SHOUT OUT: Social Media & Max Hartlage

We want to thank Max Hartlage for leading our KAS social media this year, and we hope you are ALL following the many wonderful school experiences happening at Our KAS. I also want to encourage you to get friends to follow us as we seek to share how great KAS is. Questions about social media? Please email Max directly at max.hartlage@kentuckyavenueschool.org.

Parent Conference Reminder: April 30th

Soon, you will be receiving invitations to join your homeroom teachers for our final Parent-Teacher Conference scheduled for April 30th. There will not be school for students so please plan ahead. This will be a time to reflect on your child's school year, plan for the coming weeks, and imagine next school year. Yes, you may bring your child to KAS for the conference time, but please arrange for them to have a book (preferred) or tablet so they may be engaged and independent.

KAS Middle School Washington, DC Trip

Each year, Middle School KAS students take an end-of-year trip to a city/region that links to our learning. Next month, students in grades 6 through 8 will be headed to Washington DC for a (very long) day visiting museums, strolling the City, and learning as much as possible. Thanks for supporting our students as they explore this wonderful city.

Weekly Organic Snacks Underway

Thanks to a small but amazing group of parents who are leading the (re)intro- duction of healthy foods back into the KAS lunch experience. For the rest of this school year, KAS parents, teachers, and students will prepare organic and locally-sourced fruits and vegetables for snacks that may include dips and smoothies. These school-prepared foods will serve as a start to future increases in healthy food snack options at KAS. Plan to have your child enjoy organic and locally-sourced snacks Thursdays for the coming weeks.
THINKING AHEAD: KAS has planned a June 9-10 Volunteer Work Day (at the beginning of summer). We will be painting, cleaning out unwanted resources, and completing repairs. I hope that if you are free, you'll join us here as we prepare for the 25-26 school year. More information coming in May.

RUNNING UPDATE

Last week 20 students signed up to join running club, and in spite of the rain and colder weather, students from Kindergarten through 7 committed to a mile run, with many exceeding that distance in the allotted time. See you all again this week!

Spirit Day: Kangaroo Challenge

KAS hosts regular spirit days where students can enjoy the true spirit of KAS. This week, we host the Kangaroo Challenge (see image above). We'll be having some fun "kangaroo events" like the Standing Long Jump and a 1-legged run. Thanks for your support as parents as we continue to keep school a "hoppy place" for all our students.
Calendar Review: Parents, remember that the KAS General Calendar is posted on the KAS website. If you have questions about upcoming events, we post the "basics" there, and we work to provide updates via this newsletter, teacher updates, and by email.
