HAPPY 2025 TO OUR KAS PARENTS!

Parents, alumni, and friends, I wish you all the best for 2025. This newsletter will provide you with a list of some upcoming events across our school to help you with planning.

JANUARY 16: All-School Class Trip to Phipps.
Next week, all grades will head to Schenley Park for a tour of the Conservatory before the exhibits are changed. We will leave around 9AM on the 16th and return after lunch. Each grade level will be making slightly different transportation plans so please look to your teachers for final details. Due to a specific parent donation, there is no student admission fee!

Club KAS Update.
We are beginning to develop more fun activities after school, and Max at ClubKAS has begun sending more information to you. We are beginning more programming in-house and are expanding opportunities for our children to have fun with friends after school. Join us at ClubKAS this spring!

Organic Lunch Program Meeting.
For two decades, we have had a long tradition of healthy children's foods at KAS, thanks to people like Miriam, Sherry, and others. As such, Miriam and I will be hosting a morning coffee Wednesday, January 22nd at 830AM to discuss our lunch room (cafe) history, healthy foods, and opportunities for the future. If you are free, please stop in for a coffee or tea and offer your thoughts on how we might re-grow an organic food component to our whole-student commitments.

UPCOMING: Elementary School Talent Show.
Our Grade 3 students are leading the charge on organizing an elementary school (K-5) talent show to take place one evening (6PM?) late in February. I congratulate these motivated students, and I encourage all K-5 students to consider taking the stage later next month. Now is the time to start preparing! More details and a sign-up sheet are coming soon.

UPCOMING: Spring Running Club & Kids of Steel.
In just a few weeks, we will resume our KAS Running Club. Our goal will be for our students to participate in, and complete, the KIDS OF STEEL run (scheduled for April 5th, 2025). We have acquired a grant so students' registration fees may be waived. As always, runners of all abilities and grades are welcome to join.

MAP Testing Round II coming later this month.
Methods of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing (Round 2 of 3) will take place toward the end of January, with different test days at each grade level. These test results guide teacher planning, though the scores are not typically something we highlight with our students. There is no student preparation other than to get a good night's rest along with a healthy breakfast. A final round of MAP testing will take place the last 2-3 weeks of the school year. This is for Grades 3-8, and homeroom teachers will reach out soon with specific test dates.

Dr. Martin Luther King Day - No School
There is no school Monday, January 20th for students and teachers. Enjoy your 3-day weekend.

In other news...

Chess & Checkers

We will begin to promote Chess, Checkers, and Connect 4 as a means to celebrate board games, learn strategy, and have fun with others - please support these classic games at home. Our long-term goal is that all KAS students can play these games at a basic level or higher.

Boys & Girls Club Resumes

KAS will resume weekly visits to the Boys and Girls Club in Shadyside, and at the same time, will continue to encourage trips to Mellon Park and Walnut Street. Please be mindful of these events so you can assure your child has appropriate clothing and shoes/boots for the walk(s).

School Spirit Days Continue

Montly School Spirit Days and assemblies will continue with our next Spirit Day being BEACH DAY scheduled for Friday January 31st. Spirit Days are meant to be exciting events that promote comradery and fun for all. Spirit Days are also for parents and teachers, so stop by and join us each month!

IMPORTANT: All Parent - Please Save the Date for the Evening of January 28th.

Kentucky Avenue School is thrilled to announce our partnership with RedefinED to expand and manage our Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program! This collaboration will significantly enhance our capacity to offer financial aid and ensure more children have access to our wonderful educational community.

IMPORTANT:
Please mark your calendars for a Zoom meeting on the evening of January 28th. Erin Rockwell, our RedefinEd Donor Relationships Manager, will explain the details of the EITC program and its advantages. We request that every KAS family attend the meeting. More information will be forthcoming.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
