Quick KAS Mid-Summer Update
Based on pictures coming in from this summer's vacations, it is certain that KAS students are having a great summer traveling, hiking, swimming and relaxing! I hope you, parents, are getting some time to take it easy as well.
We have been busy at school preparing for the coming school year. We're making repairs, ordering resources, rewriting parts of the curriculum, cleaning, and restructuring the master schedule. We are already planning for more STEM Challenges, School Spirit Days, ability groupings, Makerspace time, and of course, non-stop learning. The school itself has remained open, and Sherry and I have been in the office most days. However, I have found time to play some disc golf, get some cycling in, work on my aging house (ugh!), and get my kids to camps, work, volunteering, and elsewhere. For my family and me, getting outside is always a priority when the weather is warm.
For the fall, we will build up on the successes from the past year and offer more project- and play-based learning, class trips, STEM & Making, reading opportunities, math development, social-emotional learning, and higher-level learning across the board. We will increase our community engagement. This coming year, we want each and every student to love coming to school and feel empowered throughout the day. Our middle schoolers in particular can expect some additional electives, and (gulp) preparation for the high schools of their interest.
Most of the summer is still ahead of us - please encourage your child to keep reading, writing, and visiting new places.
August 27th is our first day of school, and while that might seem like a long way off, it's just around the corner. Enjoy your summer and we'll see you soon.

Back-to-School Picnic Confirmed
I am happy to confirm that KAS will again host its annual Back-to-School Picnic and Ice Cream Social. This year, we have secured space at Wightman Field/Park in Squirrel Hill from 6-8PM on Wednesday August 20th. (note that the 25-26 calendar on the website states the picnic is on the 21st which is incorrect - I apologize). I hope all new and returning families will join us on the 20th. I will send an update with more details in the weeks leading up to the event.

New Families - A Special Welcome
KAS will be welcoming new families to nearly every grade level, especially in Kindergarten. Our goal is to assure their assimilation into our community is seamless and supportive. Parents new to KAS: please stay in communication with Genevieve, our Admissions Director, and please send her any queries you may have. Later this summer, we will be hosting a parents' coffee morning on Walnut Street, and we'll be offering supplemental campus tours. Truly, if you need anything, please contact us so we may assure your school year starts with smiles and excitement.

The KAS Mascot: The Kangaroo. We at Kentucky Avenue School take great pride in our mascot, the kangaroo. As you may know, kangaroos are known for their power and speed, their ability to overcome obstacles, and their resilience and adaptability. Additionally, kangaroos are protective of their young, approachable, energetic and playful. While kangaroos are notably independent, they live in groups (mobs) which to KAS symbolizes independence as well as the importance of community engagement.
The kangaroo represents our mission which states that KAS is "a progressive K-8 community that challenges and supports each other to become critically thoughtful, creative, and compassionate global citizens through academic achievement, self-discovery, and social engagement."
