The Value of Parent Engagement

Kentucky Avenue School has a compelling story to tell. We've been around for more than two decades as KAS, and we have roots dating back to 1970. Our graduates visit us on their days off (it's true!), and we hear regularly from past parents and former teachers. So many wonderful people have come through our school over the years, and more are on the way. Thanks to the parents who have been in our halls recently for Curriculum Night, to those helping with class trips, and even to the parents who have donated coffee and donuts to our teachers. Your presence makes a difference.

We have a lot coming up - so check with your teachers. Next week, we have our second all-school assembly, Crazy Hat Day, our Egg Drop Contest, and K-1 will be headed to the Mattress Factory. Then, it's a short run to our KAS Book Fair (starting October 28) and Halloween, then on to Thanksgiving. I hope you will continue ask your children about these events. Call us with any questions you have.

OUR NEXT ALL-SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY IS OCTOBER 16

Next Wednesday, we encourage all students (and teachers!) to participate in Crazy Hat Day. We're hoping all students will wear a hat to school, and we encourage students to get creative! Designing a unique hat or "something that rests on one's head" is welcomed, and we're looking to give some awards to students for their efforts.

NO SCHOOL MONDAY, OCTOBER 14TH

Next Monday October 14 there will be no school. Classes will resume the following morning at our regularly scheduled times.

Halloween Planning

Halloween parties and weather permitting, an outdoor parade, are planned for our upcoming Halloween celebration. Please remember that plastic masks may need to be removed for learning in class, and that fake guns and knives should remain at home.

Strategic Meetings

KAS teachers have been working to further develop the learning goals of the school. We have been looking strategically at our instructional needs over the next 3-5 years. From Makerspace and Art Room to classroom needs, we are designing more thoughtful learning experiences for your children.

Gardening Traditions

KAS values gardening and stewardship for living things. Recently, students concluded the growing season with a final visit to our Enright Garden plot. They harvested many vegetables, and are planning to resume planting in the spring.

OUR ROOTS: ART AND PROJECT-BASED LEARNING

Self Expression and laughter are key parts of the KAS student experience. In walking the halls this past week, we can see examples that we are truly a place for kids:

Expanding our Work with the PAIS

Kentucky Avenue School has had a long relationship with PAIS, the organization that oversees 120 private schools in the Commonwealth, and we are currently participating on multiple levels as we seek to strengthen our school. For example, we now part of a consortium that assesses school needs and shared resources. Also, we are part of a second small group of schools that is working with a private Education consultant throughout the school year to enhance our strategic focus for the future.

Fall Matching Fundraiser: Update Coming

On behalf of the teachers, we wish to express our gratitude for your contributions to our fall Matching Fundraiser. From the parents who offered the matching funds, to those who have given to their abilities, we expect a total success - not for us, but for the students we teach. A final update will be shared next week.
