One Last Shout -Out This Year

All K-8 students participated together today in our first KAS STEM Challenge this week.

Students were placed in random groups across all age levels, and were given NO information in advance. Once grouped, each team received a small box of maker-materials and basic directions to build a tower as tall as possible. But, it was not as easy as it sounds.

First, the rules included a time limit of 20 minutes of building, and mandated that all students across every grade had the ability to fully contribute in their groups. Next, the tower had to be free-standing and teams were only given six inches of tape. Teachers were not allowed to answer student questions, so groups had to be creative and efficient - and independent.

STEM stands for Science-Technology-Engineering-Math and our goal was to have students utilize these related skills and knowledge. The end result was that every group succeeded in building a tower of at least 50 centimeters, with three groups building towers over one meter tall! Also, teams proved themselves extremely successful at working together - without teacher intervention. Below are a few pictures from the event.

In the end, our students exhibited their skills with working together and planning across all ages, creating a functional structure, being creative with the materials available, meeting deadlines, self-management, and most importantly, having fun while learning - all without direct teacher participation.

Our next STEM Challenge is planned for February or March, and will "build upon" this experience.
We will try to get you more pictures via social media in the near future. Congratulations to our KAS Kangaroos!
