Substitute Teacher (2026-2027)

Kentucky Avenue School, a K-8 independent school in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh is always looking for terrific people who might be interested in substitute teaching! Kentucky Avenue seeks to retain creative, innovative and experienced substitute teachers with an awareness of experiential learning. KAS values the integration of social and emotional learning with academics, and is dedicated to supporting highly differentiated curriculum in a warm, inclusive school climate. Responsibilities 

  • Teaching planned subjects to a group of children in grades Kindergarten through Eight
  • Communicating effectively and understanding the nature of KAS as a teacher
  • Working as a part of a team; extra duties may include recess, lunch and carpool duties
  • Being an integral part of a caring community of learners

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree in elementary education is an additional asset. 
  • Ideal candidates will have some elementary school teaching experience, a basic understanding of differentiated instruction, a flexible and team-oriented approach, exceptional communication skills and attention to detail, and a sense of humor.  
  • Appropriate Act Clearances and updated resume on-file at KAS   

Preferred Qualities 

  • A depth of knowledge and understanding of young children
  • A passion for working with young children
  • A general knowledge of progressive education across grade levels
  • Sensitivity to diverse communities of learners and an appreciation of developmental differences in an elementary school setting
  • A knowledge of 21st Century Skills and how they relate to classroom teaching 

Salary & Start Date

  • This is a casual job,
  • Salary is $18-$22 per hour based on experience and commitment.
  • KAS may start this position as early as August 2026
