Learning Support Teacher for the KAS Learning Lab

Job Description

 

Kentucky Avenue School, a K-8 independent school in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, announces a search for a part-time Learning Support Teacher for the 2022-23 school year. This will be a 20 hour per week position. Kentucky Avenue School’s Learning Lab addresses the academic, social and emotional needs of our diverse student population.  We seek to hire a creative, innovative and experienced educator with a commitment to experiential learning. Responsibilities:

* Collaborate with classroom teachers to address specific academic, social and emotional needs of students with and without special needs

* Collaborate with classroom teachers and principal to create and maintain personalized education plans for students

* Work with students one-on-one, in small groups, or in students’ classroom settings to increase student achievement and confidence

* Create and teach courses or experiences for specific groups of students as needed

* Communicate effectively and often with parents, teachers, Intermediate Unit teachers and psychologists, outside agencies, and other faculty and staff as needed

* Assess students as needed and provide specific instructional recommendations for interventions to classroom teachers, parents and principal

* Adapt materials for instructional purposes and measure student progress

* Collaborate with classroom teachers and principal to devise behavior management strategies for students when needed

* Conducts student observations and gathers data as needed for the planning of student interventions

* Continue to grow as a professional through professional development and continuing study

 

Requirements:

* Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field

* PA PK-8 Special Education Certification, related certification or Private Academic Certification 

* At least 2 years teaching experience

* An educational philosophy that aligns with that of our school

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills over multiple platforms

* PA Act 151, Act 34  and FBI Criminal History Record Clearance

* Orton-Gillingham experience

Part Time K-8 Spanish Teacher

Job Description

 

Kentucky Avenue School, a K-8 independent school in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, announces a search for a part-time Spanish Teacher for the 2022-23 school year. This will be a 20 hour per week position.  The Spanish teacher is responsible for creating a flexible elementary classroom that promotes learning and personal growth. He/she works to establish effective rapport with students and good relationships with parents and other staff members. The Spanish teacher motivates students to develop the necessary skills for language acquisition and provides rich, instructional experiences as a foundation for the introduction of the Spanish language and culture of Spanish speaking countries.

* Teaches Spanish to multiple grade levels in a way that matches the individual needs of students

* Supervise co-curricular roles and attends to assigned duties

* Establishes effective communication lines with parents and students

* Supervises students in and out of classroom activities during the school day 

* Participates in curriculum and staff development opportunities as required 

* Maintains a high level of professional competence through in-service education

Preferred Skills and Experience:

* A proven ability to differentiate instruction to meet individual needs and integrate learning into the daily schedule  

* Fluent written and spoken Spanish  

* Previous teaching experience, and strong knowledge of developing a Spanish curriculum that will meet the needs of the individual student 

* An ability to communicate well with all ages of elementary school students, staff and parents 

* Capable of instructing students in a supportive manner that addresses multiple learning styles 

* Understanding of a wide range of assessment tools and strategies with the ability to share their application to inquiry-based instruction 

* Experience promoting student agency and ownership of learning by teaching students to develop success criteria and involving them in self-reflection and goal setting against their criteria. 

* Experience in integrating technology in order to enhance student learning 

* A positive attitude and a committed team player 

* Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and which develop a sense of classroom community and trust 

* A solid understanding of an elementary organization, programs and students and a willingness to adopt the KAS mission into their teaching strategies 

* Experience in curriculum and assessment development 

* Experience in using standards and benchmarks specifically related to Spanish instruction 

* Proven ability to promote World Languages throughout the whole school, making Spanish visible and important within the elementary community

Kentucky Avenue seeks to hire a creative, innovative and experienced educator with a commitment to experiential learning. KAS values the integration of social and emotional learning with academics, and is dedicated to providing highly differentiated curriculum in a warm, inclusive school climate. Additionally, Kentucky Avenue School embraces Maker-Centered Learning and the Responsive Classroom approach.


 

Responsibilities will include:  

• Teaching all subjects to a group of children 

• Working as a part of a team; extra duties include recess, lunch and carpool duties

• Being an integral part of a caring community of learners

 

A successful candidate will have:

• A depth of knowledge and understanding of young children

• A passion for working with young children

• A knowledge of guided reading and  teaching Singapore Math

• Sensitivity to diverse communities of learners and an appreciation of developmental 

differences in an elementary school setting

• A knowledge of 21st Century Skills and how they relate to classroom teaching 

 

A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree in elementary education is a real plus.  Ideal candidates will have some elementary school teaching experience, an understanding of differentiated instruction, a flexible and team-oriented approach, excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, superior interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor.  

 

Lunch is included on Mondays and Wednesdays when school is in session.
